Plastic_Space_Room
Plastic_Space_Room is an in-situ interactive installation incorporating mixed media and practices (recording devices, video, constructions, live streaming, QR codes, etc.). Its primary aim is to contemplate concepts such as time, space, experience, self, multiplicity, isolation, boundary, observation, recording, obedience, and control in relation to the use of technological means. Each viewer enters the constructed “plastic” space of the installation alone, using their mobile phone and an app that enables them to use the phone’s camera while following instructions provided by the Director/artist. As the visitor enters the constructed space of the installation, they experience a gradual transition from being an observing subject to becoming an observed object. Thus, despite their initial sense of control, visitors realize they were never able to regulate the flow of time within the installation. Consequently, by alternating between the roles of observer and observed, they become the centre of the action and a spectacle that takes place amid the incessant flow of internet data. This constant shift prevents the viewer from understanding the most crucial period of their presence within the installation. To the point where this period essentially occurs without their knowledge and possibly against their intention, in a way that they cannot regain control over it. As a result, moments where the visitor’s image multiplies become understandable only when the entire experience has already passed. The ephemeral sculpture of the visitor’s image turns into another ephemeral moment gradually sinking into the chaotic flow of time and data. Ironically, the control of this moment might not even be held by the creator/director, both literally and metaphorically. This somewhat harsh realization recalls Cezanne’s words: “A moment of the world passes, will I ever become a part of it, or will I just continue to pass it by?
